| POI HISTORY: Poi was originally used many years ago by the indigenous Maori people of Polynesia to increase their flexibility, strength, and coordination. Poi was also used as a form of entertainment and as a game by Maori women in New Zealand. To watch a Maori dancer perform with the poi is to be mesmerized by their skill and dexterity. It is said that in the old days only women of high rank knew how to dance the poi, and they jealously guarded this knowledge from the lower classes. To the Maori, POI means ball at the end of long rope. The original POI were made with flax leaves rolled into a ball. POI TODAY: There is increasing interest in the art of Poi today. Poi swinging competitions are held throughout the world, and Poi has now found a new home in the nightclub as a visual art.
